Wireless Security Tips

Wireless networks are becoming more commonplace as the technology improves and more affordable. Both business and home networks are discovering how useful wireless networks are for communicating with other computers and connecting to the Internet.

But while wireless networks make networking so much easier, it is also vulnerable to being exploited. Anyone can use basic software to detect and capture the signal of your wireless device. Within a matter of moments they could be accessing your private files, learning your bank details and using your broadband connection without them even having to enter your home or business. That is why it is important to keep your wireless networks secure with a few simple yet important steps.

Use a firewall. The first line of defence is to protect your wireless network with a firewall that keeps casual intruders from accessing your files. Most wireless routers come equipped with a firewall and there is a multitude of free firewall software available on the Internet. Some anti-virus programmes also offer a firewall as part of their various protections. If nothing else, then just keep your default Windows firewall activated at all times to protect your wireless network from intruders.

Encrypt your data. Firewalls can’t always protect your data when it is being transmitted via the wireless network. Additional security in the form of encryption protocols will ensure that the data you are sending can only be read by the intended receiver. As with firewalls, most wireless routers come with encryption features already installed but for extra security there is additional security software available.

Turn it off when not in use. This is especially true for home networks and laptops. When you are not using your wireless connection turn it off. Not only will you save some energy and bandwidth but you also reduce the chances of someone accessing your wireless network without your knowledge.

Watch where you connect. Wi-Fi hotspots are a very convenient way to connect to the Internet in a coffee bar, at a hotel or any other location where you may need access. But be smart where you connect. There is no reason to do your banking at a coffee bar when the bank is close by and you can certainly wait until you’re in the office to send those confidential documents.

It is also important to make sure what you are connecting to. Unscrupulous individuals often create hotspots near legitimate ones hoping to catch people that connect to theirs instead of the real one. When using a public hotspot, make sure you ask an employee that you are connecting to the correct wireless network before sending any type of information.

Even when you keep these things in mind and take every single precaution you can think of, no wireless network is 100% secure. For that matter, no network connection is 100% secure. The best defence against intrusion is to always stay vigilant and not to take any chances.
