The wonder of a VPN - Virtual Private Network
More people are coming to realise the advantages of Virtual Private Networks (VPN). A VPN allows people and companies to communicate with one another over great distances, but at a much reduced cost. Virtual Private Networks hold many advantages and are actually quite simple to use and to install in your home or office.
Virtual Private Networks create a link between different networks through another network – mostly the internet. There is no single line that connects to connected networks; rather the two networks can communicate securely with one another through a VPN. A VPN can be used to connect branch offices of a company to the main office and to each other or it can be used by travelling employees to keep in touch with the office.
There are quite a few advantages to Virtual Private Networks. For many, one of the greatest advantages is the reduced operational costs. By using the existing networks of the internet, there is no reason to lease a secure line to connect two private networks. These two networks can be connected, privately and securely, via a VPN that runs through the Internet. This, in turn, results in a much extended connectivity and improved productivity as employees are able to access the company networks from nearly anywhere. Additionally, the simple topology of VPN means it is easy to set up and maintain while securing the Virtual Private Networks is also easy to accomplish.
The perfect VPN is secure using a combination of firewalls, encryption and IPSec to ensure the network is protected. It should also be reliable allowing people to connect to the network when they need to without any problems or hassles. And perhaps one of the nicest features of the perfect Virtual Private Network is its scalability. In a nutshell, if someone were to receive (or evesdrop as it is called) on communication sent on a VPN, they will not be able to see the information sent, as it is encrypted.
As distance or the amount of computers connected to a Virtual Private Network has no effect on the price of the network, the VPN can be expanded as necessary. In most cases, expanding a Virtual Private Network is literally as easy as adding new clients and installing the necessary client software that allow connection to the VPN.
Remote Access VPN is another form of a Virtual Private Network where a user connects to a network from another location. This is often used by sales people that are on the road and connect to their employer’s network to check email or access critical information.
Virtual Private Networks take advantage of the largest network that is already in place – the internet. Through it, networks can communicate securely with one another at a fraction of the cost of leasing a private line to connect the networks. VPN is simple, it is fast and it is effective.
