Frustrating Website Characteristics
The Internet is a huge place and as more people have access to broadband it is becoming more accessible every day. That is why it is important that your website should be user friendly and accessible. With so many other websites offering the same information and services a client doesn’t have the time or the inclination to put up with a poorly designed website.
There are many things out there that can irritate and frustrate clients as they are browsing the Internet for information or services. Even though broadband Internet makes it easier and faster to surf the Internet, clients still have limited time in which to find what they are looking for. That is why it is best to avoid, if at all possible, some of the common mistakes that many a poor website makes that can irritate and frustrate potential clients.
Few things irritate clients more than advertisements on a website. While the occasional banner add or Google AdWord is fine; it is the annoying large and intrusive advertisements that really annoy people. Anything that breaks the text of the website or forces the client to scroll down to get past it can be very infuriating. If you really must have advertisements, keep them as small and simple as possible. Linked to advertisements are pop-up windows. These little scripts open up a new window that quite often contains an advertisement or irrelevant information.
While pictures, music and videos on a website can make a nice impression there should be a limit. All these extra bits detract from the main focus of your website and make it hard to find the information that a person is looking for. Perhaps the worst is that these extras add to the overall loading time of your website. When a client has to wait too long for a website to load they are more likely to leave than to stay and wait for it to load. Keep music, pictures, videos and any other extras to the functional minimum.
Hand in hand with the above elements is the overall design of the website. Use fonts that are easy to read on a computer monitor and remember to use complementary colours of text and background. Nothing infuriates like having the information in front of you but being unable to read it.
Dead links are another frustration. In keeping the content of your website up to date make sure that all the links are also working correctly. This applies to both internal and external links. Few things send a client packing faster than links that don’t work.
The Internet has made it easier for people to find information and do business but they still have little time to mess around. Keep your website user-friendly to ensure that clients that come to your site will come back again.
