What is a Dynamic DNS and how does it work?

Dynamic DNS is a solution to a rather annoying problem that many people have whom use ADSL. For any person or business that has a website on the internet, dynamic DNS can make life just a little easier and ensure that your website can always be found.

Unknown to many people, a computer is forced to change its IP address every now and then when you are surfing the internet by the service provider. The internet service provider (ISP) assigns your computer an IP address whenever it logs onto the internet. This address remains the same for approximatelly 24 hours. For the average user and those with dynamic DNS, this isn’t a problem.

The problem comes in when you try to use your ADSL line to host a server or service. If your IP address changes, others on the Internet will not know the new address of your server, thus making your server unusable. If you use a name for the server, that name is translated to a numerical IP address for your server, and the IP address must be correct. Since the IP address changes, a service called Dynamic DNS is required to update the address on the DNS server to reflect the new servers IP address.

Dynamic DNS takes care of this problem by changing the ADSL servers IP address to keep up with any changes. This ensures that other people will still be able to access your server by using the name or URL of your server. Dynamic DNS is a very simple process but it is incredibly useful and a necessity if you want your website to be found by other people.

You may think that only large companies have any need or can afford dynamic DNS. The truth of the matter is that anyone that has an ADSL connection whom wants to host a server can take advantage of dynamic DNS and for most home users the price tag is pretty attractive. It goes without saying that companies could also use this technology.

There are many companies in the market that offer dynamic DNS services to companies and home users alike. Dynamic DNS can manifest as hardware or software but, is very seldom a combination of the two. Often the hardware, routers and other network devices, have dynamic DNS built into the firmware. All that needs to be done is for it to be configured to your needs.
