Content Management Systems - The Pros and Cons

Content Management Systems (CMS) has allowed more and more people to create, update and maintain their own websites. With a CMS almost anyone can have their own website up and running once they have a web hosting service to put their website on. But using a CMS has both advantages and disadvantages that not many people may be aware of and before you embark on your own website building expedition with a CMS it is a good idea to make sure what you are letting yourself in for.

A CMS is a system that allows a person to manage and publish web content without having to edit the actual code of the website. This means that anyone can change, update or edit a website even if they have no working knowledge of HTML, Java Script on any of the other website marketing languages. Your typical CMS is often very easy to use and comes with a number of advantages.

Perhaps the most cited advantage is the fact that users require no working knowledge of HTML or programming code to change or edit the website. Most CMS systems are also designed in such a way that multiple users can have access to the website to make changes when necessary. This increases the overall flexibility of the website as anyone in the company can change the information that is relevant to their departments. Since the majority of CMS systems use templates there is also little chance of the overall design of the website changing as the CMS enforces the design template of the website.

Cost wise a CMS system is also very attractive. The maintenance of the website is left entirely up to the author and his or her company. There is no need to contact and pay a web design company to make changes and, as changes are made in real time, there is no reason to ask the web hosting company to upload changes. This is a saving in both cost and time.

On the downside a CMS system does remove some a lot of functionality and flexibility from a website. The design is pretty much set in stone and changing or renovating the site will require the creation of brand new templates. While most CMS systems are pretty straight forward, some staff will still require some training to use the system effectively.

Security is another concern. Since anyone that can login to the CMS system can make changes without contacting the web host, malicious changes can be made to the site without anyone’s knowledge. Website marketing is also sometimes limited with CMS systems as they are not usually geared or programmed to be effective for search engine optimization needs.

CMS systems make maintaining a website much easier than ever before. It is better to observe all the available options before deciding on a CMS system. Ensure that the CMS you have chosen is compatible with your web host and that you, and your staff know how to use it. With any luck you will soon have your own professional website.
