Common ADSL Broadband Connectivity Problems
Most people have gotten used to a broadband Internet connection that is always on. You can jump online when you need to and there is no waiting for sites to load thanks to the high speeds. But as with most technological innovations things can go wrong at the most inopportune times. But there is no reason to call the phone company or your broadband service provider at the first sign of trouble. There are a few things anyone can do to try and fix an ADSL problem.
The first thing you need to check if there is a problem with your broadband connection is your username and password. ADSL modems and routers save the username and passwords allowing users to go online when they want to. But a power outage or the like can turn the modem off for a brief moment and sometimes the username and password is wiped clean.
The ADSL modem itself may be the source of the problem. Check that the LED’s on the modem are on and blinking. Most ADSL modems will have two lights marked power and ADSL (or Link). If the ADSL light is blinking it means the modem is working correctly. Should this not be the case, restart your ADSL modem by switching it on and off. If the lights still fail to light up or blink then there may be a problem with the hardware or the service provider. Check with your broadband provider to determine if there is a fault on their side.
Sometimes you may experience interruptions in your broadband connection. The broadband connection frequently drops unexpectedly. There are a number of reasons why this could be happening. Faulty telephone extension cables are one of the major reasons for broadband connections dropping unexpectedly. Generally it is not a good idea to use extension cables in the first place since it can reduce the overall performance of the broadband connection, but if there is no other choice then ensure that the cables are intact and in good working order.
Faulty wiring, either in your home or by the telephone company, can also lead to unexpected drops in broadband connectivity. Corroded, damaged or tangled wires can lead to a lot of interference that may lead to interruptions of your broadband connectivity. If this is the case, contact your service provider or telephone company to repair the damaged and faulty wiring as soon as possible.
Another leading culprit in unreliable broadband connectivity is electrical interference. Common household items can play havoc so keep things wireless phones, cellular phones, microwaves and the like away from the ADSL modem.
Sometimes the problem with the broadband connection is not the fault of the ADSL modem, the services provider or the lines. In these cases check your computer for viruses and spyware that may be having a negative effect on your connectivity. There are a number of malicious programmes that can hijack your broadband connection or makes it next to impossible for your computer to connect to the Internet. Always maintain an up to date antivirus programme on your computer to stop these viruses before they become a problem.
If all else fails it might be time to call in a technician. Also remember that unless you know what you are doing, do not try to repair the ADSL modem or the wires yourself. It is always better – and safer – to ask a professional to do the job.
