ADSL has become a catch all term to refer to the standard broadband Internet connection that the majority of people use to connect to the Internet. It has been the standard connection for a long time but recent technological developments have spawned a replacement for the tried and tested broadband solution: ADSL2+

 

ADSL2+ is at its simplest an upgraded, faster version of the standard ADSL broadband that we are used to. ADSL has been around for a lot longer than most people realise, since about the 1980’s. It was designed as a way to allow users to download files faster than they upload files – the standard method for using the Internet. The implementation of ADSL as the broadband Internet solution of choice only really became prevalent in the past decade.

 

Broadband technology continued to develop, however, and ADSL2+ is the culmination of users’ desire for even faster, more reliable Internet. ADSL was limited to a speed of about 2 Mbps and even this was affected by location and network conditions. ADSL was also notoriously difficult to connect to a network requiring some knowledge of the system to implement successfully.

 

ADSL2+ takes broadband to a new level. Capable of speeds up to 24 Mbps, it is a vast improvement on the old ADSL. ADSL2+ is also much easier to implement into a network and is compatible with almost any system. Another useful feature of ADSL2+ that is of interest to broadband users is that it supports port bonding. Port bonding allows ADSL2+ to provide bandwidth equal to the sum of the ports available making ADSL2+ considerably faster than ADSL ever was.

 

South African broadband Internet users have yet to feel the power of ADSL2+. It is only as recent as November 2009 that some service providers have started offering ADSL2+ to their customers in 5 Mbps, 8 Mbps, 15 Mbps and 20 Mbps packages. Upgrading the existing ADSL infrastructure will take some time, but will vastly improve the broadband experience for all South African users.

 

ADSL2+ is a considerable upgrade from the existing ADSL broadband. Increased speed and reliability are both hallmarks of ADSL2+ that South African broadband Internet subscribers will soon be able to rely on.
